From April 13 to 15, Thailand officially celebrates the Thai New Year Songkran 2023. According to the Thai calendar, it is 2266 since the Buddha passed into Nirvana.

By tradition, Thais take to the streets and with the words “Sawasdee pi mai!” (Happy New Year!) they water everyone they meet with water guns, buckets and hoses, and paint each other with talcum powder. Water, as a symbol of life, is sprayed everywhere, bringing grace to everyone.

In addition to the tradition of pouring water, Songkran is a family celebration of love and reverence. The morning of this day begins with a trip to the temple, where the monks are presented with homemade treats as a sign of respect and reverence for their mentors. Then it’s time for the next New Year’s ceremony – washing the family statuette of Buddha with clean water with rose petals and jasmine. After that, the family sits down at the festive table to enjoy a festive meal.

Songkran is a fun holiday that has no analogues in the world. In honour of Songkran, contests, parades, entertainment and festivals are held in Phuket. Every year during this period, Thailand becomes especially attractive for tourists who are happy to take part in local events.
