TripAdvisor®, the travel planning and booking site, today announced the winners of its Travelers’ Choice™ awards for Islands. Award winners were determined using an algorithm that took into account the quantity and quality of reviews and ratings for hotels, restaurants and attractions on islands worldwide, gathered over a 12-month period, as well as traveler booking interest on TripAdvisor.

“With common traits like breathtaking beaches, exciting activities and popular hotels and restaurants, the Travelers’ Choice Islands are favorites of the TripAdvisor community,” said Barbara Messing, chief marketing officer for TripAdvisor.

Phuket, the country’s largest island and an international magnet for beach enthusiasts, was ranked No. 8 of the world’s top 10 islands in the Traveller’s Choice Award by TripAdvisor.

The announcement today comes two months after Phuket’s Kata Noi beach was voted one of the world’s best beaches by the travel website.

Phuket was described by TripAdvisor as “Blue lagoons and salmon sunsets make for a dream-like atmosphere, and indeed, a vacation here can feel a bit surreal. Watersports are the most popular activities, though once you’ve had enough sun there’s still plenty to explore at the island’s aquariums, gardens, and Buddhist temples.”

Regionally, Phuket was the second best island in Asia after Bali. Koh Samui and Koh Tao were ranked third and fourth respectively.
