The Aluminum for Prosthesis Project is calling for all donations of aluminum to be donated to a nationwide project that seeks to recycle at least 80 tons of aluminum into prosthetic legs.  The project, initiated by the Prostheses Foundation of HRH The Princess Mother, aims to reduce the volume of garbage and make prosthetic legs more affordable.

“The cost of an imported prosthetic leg is around 10,000 baht, while one made with recycled aluminum will be about 700 baht,” Dr Pornsri Suthanarak said.  “Examples of the aluminum we can recycle are: cans, ring pulls, lids of power drinks and glass bottled water, mag wheels, parts of bicycles or airplanes, powder cases, crutches, canes and walkers,” she said. “One ton can produce 1,000 prosthetic legs,” Dr Pronsri said.

The Absolute Wold Group have already set up a drop box for the collection of aluminium and are now rolling out the initiative to all resorts to encourage all staff and guests to donate their soft drink cans and unwanted aluminium products.

A shining example of this was a surprise delivery by Buatong Mahawongthong who works in the restaurant at Absolute Sea Pearl and who handed over a staggering 8 kilos of ring pulls collected over an 8 year period to Absolute World Group CSR Coordinator Kanokwan Homcha-aim.

“Its amazing that Buatong had the foresight to start collecting aluminium for many years and understands the benefits the recycling of this material can have, her efforts certainly set the tone for the rest of us, proving together we really can make a difference.” said Kanokwan Homcha-aim.
